Squargling character studies 3

Some squargling heads, after the beak practice. (Yeah, I kinda got bored on the one guy’s body.)

Beak studies

In order to draw these characters’ beaks more accurately, I decided to spend an afternoon at Google Image Search and copy down parrot beaks.

Did you know Disney character Jose Carioca has his own comic book series down in Brazil? They just call him “Ze.” I think I need to do more Disney beak studies to get my squarglings to work better.

Squargling character studies 2 (General Makza again)

Messing around with shapes again. If I can get the solidity down, maybe then I can get these characters moving a bit!

(And as always, any help you can offer is much appreciated!)

Squargling character studies 1 (General Makza)

I’m working to improve my construction (or maybe: the way I think about construction) so my drawings stop falling apart on me. (If you have any tips, pass ‘em along in the Comments section!)

This culture honors boars and pigs so I thought if I practiced drawing wild pigs, I could incorporate that into the character design a little, to make him look more aggressive.

Make a Haunted House with me!

I’m looking for artists to participate in my 2010 “Haunted Rooms” virtual haunted house project!

Signup info’s here, but here’s a quick look at what you can expect:

“The Project is about giving our viewers the complete and utter screamin’ heebie-jeebies through the image of an empty, albeit intriguing, environment.”

There’s no fee to enter, no winners or losers, just a chance to improve your environment-drawing skills and share them with the world! After the contest, you can do whatever you want with your entry.

Happy Haunting!

PS If you like the idea but can’t participate, it’d be helpful to me if you’d please spread the word to others who might be interested! Thanks!

Original Character Sketches

I need to stop overthinking my own characters. If I relax, they end up looking much better.

Ballerinas gestures

PBS ran a fascinating program where a camera followed around different events at a European ballet school. No narration, just subtitles if people were speaking to each other in French. It had both crazy modern dance performances and classical ballet practices, but only my classical ballet “read” well enough to share.
